　　法塔（法萨·布亚梅 Fatsah Bouyahmed 饰）是一位生活在阿尔及利亚的淳朴农民，他生命中最珍贵的东西，就是他所饲养的母牛雅克林娜，法塔的梦想就是能够带着雅克林娜去参加一年一度在巴黎举办的农业会展。这一年，法塔终于收到了自己梦寐以求的邀请函，但是他的妻子娜依玛（哈吉尔·玛斯都基 Hajar Masdouki 饰）并不赞同丈夫的决定。　　倔强的法塔牵着雅克林娜，毅然决然的踏上了前往巴黎的旅途。因为经费紧张，法塔决定先乘船前往马赛，然后从那里步行抵达巴黎，一路上，法塔遇见了各种各样的意外，而他和娜依玛之间的感情，也经历了重重的考验。

　　杰布（罗伯特·米彻姆 Robert Mitchum 饰）从小就失去了父母，还陷入了父辈的恩怨情仇之中差一点就丢了性命。善良的麦多拉太太（朱迪丝·安德森 Judith Anderson 饰）救下了杰布，将他带回自己家中视如己出。麦多拉太太还有两个孩子索莉（特雷莎·怀特 Teresa Wright 饰）和亚当（约翰·罗德尼John Rodney 饰），杰布虽然同他们没有血缘关系，但是三个孩子再加上麦多拉太太，四人在乱世之中相依为命共同经营着一间小小的农场，一家人之间的关系非常的紧密。　　一晃眼多年过去，孩子们渐渐长大，杰布和索莉之间的感情开始发生微妙的变化，由单纯的亲情转变成为了爱情。美西战争爆发了，通过掷硬币的方式，杰布被选中走上前线，不知是幸运还是不幸，杰布的腿部受伤，提前得到了退役的资格。可让他没有想到的是，当他满心欢喜的返回家乡时，农场里的一切，尤其是他和亚当之间的关系发生了翻天覆地的变化。

The duo become a trio as well-to-do Lou joins them, and life on the island takes shape under the command of devout Matron. The trio rail against the system, dubious of the benevolence of the bible and taking refuge in their blossoming friendship. It’s hard to reform girls who don’t believe they need reforming. However, a sense of doom settles in when experimental forms of punishment take place in the dead of night. Nellie and Daisy plot rebellion, but unexpectedly find themselves at odds with Lou, who is afraid to break the rules.
